Cambridge is a city rich with some of the best British history, and it is only about an hour away from London. Stanstead, one of London's three airports, serves as that of Cambridge as well as most of East Anglia. The city is small and mostly dominated by the University, but there is enough to see to perhaps stay the night while you look around, instead of worrying about the chaos of taking two trains in one day. Here are some hostels that you might consider while exploring the university city.
Five minutes away from the railways station is YHA Cambridge, a chain hostel that is consistent and reliable, starting at $24 per bed per night. YHA is conveniently located for train travelers while being close enough to the city center to facilitate an efficient trip. A 15-minute walk will take you to the colleges as well as the museums, art galleries and the shops and restaurants that surround them. YHA is a great hub from which you can easily explore the ancient streets, walk the Quayside River and explore the great halls of one of the world's greatest universities.
Because of the size of the city and the way that most tourists use it (either as a daytrip or as a base for a tour of the countryside) there are not many other hostels in the city, nor are there places that can compete with YHA's prices. That being said, there is no shortage of decent places to stay, but they will cost a bit more. Starting at $38 for private rooms is Ashtrees Guest House, about two miles away from the city center to the south, near the Duxford Imperial War Museum and many beautiful villages. The city center is reachable by bus and there is a park & ride nearby, making everything great about Cambridge conveniently accessible.
Cambridge is not the most convenient city for backpackers, due to a general lack of cheap lodging, but thanks to YHA, any London backpacker can experience the city with plenty of time to spare. For those who wish to take their time and enjoy the more romantic parts of the academic city, Ashtrees is a great choice as well as countless other bed & breakfasts that provide beds for the city. Thanks to these two choices especially, Cambridge can be fully experienced by London-based travelers.
