A town of over 100,000 residents and just outside London, Cambridge is easy to get around. And the colleges create an atmosphere in which there is always something to do. Like any university town, there are good restaurants, cutting-edge theatre and great lectures. And with its status as Silicon Fen, there is also a more grown-up, cosmopolitan feel to the town.

When booking your holiday rental, make sure that you understand where the property is located - especially if you plan to visit Cambridge without a car. Due to its countryside setting, holiday cottages can be located far outside the town centre, miles from the town and its colleges. For many, the beauty of the surroundings may make up for the distance, and bicycling into Cambridge may add to their experience. Once in town, you can continue to enjoy the outdoors by punting on the Cam, or simply wandering through town, taking in the architecture.

Throughout the year, Cambridge offers visitors many festivals and events that will enliven their stay. Popular events include the Christmas and New Year Ghost Tours, the Bumps and other year-round races put on by the many rowing clubs, the Cambridge Folk Festival, and the Cambridge Bonfire night. For those who enjoy watching from the wings, May is the month when many colleges host their balls, and you can watch well-dressed students heading off to a ball. And there are always excellent exhibits at the museums. Make sure to enquire about the local events when booking your holiday flat so that you don't miss one of these lively events.

Cambridge is a town that combines the ancient with the modern, and you can choose to experience it with an eye toward one or both. You can soak in the university and its black-robed scholars, walk in the footsteps of Newton, Woolf and Milton, attend a scholarly lecture, and then immerse yourself in the excitement of innovative technological minds in Silicon Fen. You can punt on the River Cam before heading to the Cambridge Leisure Park to see a film or go bowling. You can see a play at the ADC Theatre or a less traditional show at Fleur-de-Lys. And when you return to your holiday rental, you're bound to feel as though you lived in Cambridge for centuries.
